Celestial/Unearthly, Cynthia Hand

I'm submitting this book to the 2011 Debut Author Challenge, hosted by The Story Siren. I read the Portuguese edition, which is eligible for the challenge as the US edition is, since they were both published this year.

Review: Clara is a normal girl who is a quarter angel. This means she has angelic characteristics, like wings, or some exceptional physical and mental characteristics. This also means that when she starts having visions of a boy in a burning forest, she knows they relate to her purpose - what she is meant to do. She, her mother and her brother move to Wyoming in result. There she will make new friends, discover new things about herself and find out what her purpose is, exactly.

I KNEW there had to be a YA paranormal angel book more than half decent. Cynthia Hand, I thank you so much right now. The main character, Clara, is a normal girl, with qualities and defects alike, struggling with teen and not-so-teen dilemmas. She's just finding out about her angelic heritage, specially because her mom is so secretive about the angels' business. I was curious about what her mom might be hiding, hmm…

As for the romance part… I'll just say, that's some fine twists! I'm getting allergic to more than one romantic interest at the same time, but in this case there are attenuating circumstances. This purpose stuff is bound to complicate things so much.

Which leads me to the ending. Clara ends up having to choose between her heart and her duty, and I can't say I would choose otherwise. I was dumbstruck at what was shown about her purpose; it opens up a world of possibilities and I was very curious about what's really going on.

The writer manages to write a captivating story, with a decent protagonist; the supernatural stuff is quite interesting and the author gives us her unique take on angels. I can only ask… When is the next one coming out?
