Wonderfully Wicked Read-a-Thon 2014 - Wrap-Up Post

My Shelf Confessions
And the Wonderfully Wicked Read-a-Thon 2014 comes to an end... it's sad because it's over, but it was a fun week period of 11 days, and I always enjoy having some time to dedicate myself to reading and to celebrate reading.

Let's take a look at my goals and how I did:
  • To read every day, and to read for at least an hour (two if possible) - I did so, counting the stuff I wasn't reading for the read-a-thon (it was reading, nonetheless);
  • To enter some challenges, if not all of them - I entered all of them;
  • To update my progress every day, or most likely, every day I enter a challenge - I did the second option, I updated every 2 or 3 days, whenever I entered a challenge, and when there were no more challenges left I updated every 3 days;
  • To read 3 or 4 fiction books, and mix it up with some graphic novels, manga books, short stories, or novellas (whatever floats my boat) - I read 4 fiction books and 3 comic books.

Statistically:
  • I read 4 fiction books - Haunted by Meg Cabot, Twilight by Meg Cabot, Rebel Angels by Libba Bray, Every Breath by Ellie Marney;
  • I read 3 comic books - Vingadores: Cerco [Siege] by Brian Michael Bendis, Olivier Coipel; Thor e Capitão América: A Essência do Medo [Fear Itself] by Matt Fraction, Stuart Immonen; Homem-Aranha e Vingadores: Contos de Fadas Marvel [Marvel Fairy Tales] by C.B. Cebulski, Mindy Owens, Ricardo Tércio, Niko Henrichon, Nick Dragotta, João Lemos, Nuno Plati;
  • I read 2096 pages, a bit better than the last WWRAT, and an average of 190,5 pages per day, way better than my average daily count of 136 pages this year;
  • The longest book I read was Rebel Angels with 560 pages, and the shortest one was Marvel Fairy Tales with 168 pages;
  • The books I read were a bit longer than the average page length this year, and I read more books per week than the average for me this year.

And that's a wrap-up for this read-a-thon. Thank you to the hosts and everyone who hosted a challenge; thank you for the effort in organizing this.

Below are my posts for the read-a-thon, both the starting post as well as the update posts, which contain both my progress and my answers to the challenges.

Every Breath by Ellie Marney (finished reading)

Read-a-thon status:
Every Breath is so, so cute. The main characters are totally adorable and
I want to hug them both. I'm basically fangirling here, because I rooted for
Watts and Mycroft the whole way through. Besides, the book was very
engrossing and fun, and I loved how Ellie Marney writes, Australian
colloquialisms included. What is it about Australian writers and
their witching ways of making me love their books?

Rebel Angels is taking a while to read, but Libba's writing demands I pay
attention, so I can't complain, I expected to take my time to read it.
Which is funny, since I'm reading it for a read-a-thon, but
I'm cool with my choice. I'm enjoying it.

Twilight by Meg Cabot (finished reading)
Rebel Angels by Libba Bray (currently reading)

Read-a-thon status:
The last two books from the Mediator series were so much fun! And a bit heartbreaking
too, I guess. If I didn't know another one is coming, I'd be so sad for being unable to keep
up with Suze and the gang. But that ending... when I first read it I had no idea how Cabot
was going to solve things, and it was quite impressive, such a neat and clever solution.
Though the seeds could have been planted a bit earlier... As for today, I did read, only
it was a quick, skimming/re-read of A Great and Terrible Beauty. So, though I did
spend quite a bit of time reading, I won't count it for my yearly tally, for the
read-a-thon or for my reading challenges. I'm not sure if I'll be able to start
Rebel Angels tonight, but if I do, I'll update here tomorrow.

Challenge: Scavenger Hunt hosted by Kimberly @ Caffeinated Book Reviewer
I am excited to be a host for the #WWreadathon. It’s time to dust off your Holmes hat, break out your Nancy Drew compass and grab your Scooby snacks. We are going on a Bookish Scavenger Hunt. Your task is to find as many of these objects on book covers as you can. Each item gains you an entry, and one winner will be chosen at random. Open internationally the winner will receive a book of their choose valued at 10.00 US dollars or less. Good luck and happy hunting!

a bird | bitten fruit | a lion | dominoes | shoes | fedora | a headless couple | crown/tiara | a sword | tree roots | a green dress | almost smooching | a cowboy | a witch | zombie | creepy house | an eye | a cat | large letters | blood

Have fun! To give you a little clue I found all of these items on Goodreads.  If you share your results on your blog leave a link below so I can see what you have found. Please do not leave book titles in comments. We want everyone to find their own titles. Remember to enter the books you found in the giveaway tool. Happy Hunting and reading!
Phew, this was slightly exausting. I mean it in a good way, because the cover hunt was fun, and many were quite easy to find... but it was maddening to look at so many covers to find one whose tree roots or fedora hat were just right. (What can I say, I'm a perfectionist. Small details wouldn't be able to be seen, so I wanted to pick a cover where these were a bit more obvious.)

Some of these are a bit more subjective, like the creepy house, so I chose one that looks creepy to me. Also, it's interesting how sometimes we never notice the details on covers. I'd never registered until now that this The Book Thief's cover has dominoes in it, and I must have seen it a hundred times. Well, here are my picks:

a bird | bitten fruit | a lion

dominoes | shoes | fedora

a headless couple | crown/tiara | a sword

tree roots | a green dress | almost smooching

a cowboy | a witch | zombie

creepy house | an eye | a cat

large letters | blood

Wow! Quite a variety of covers here... Well, that's it for the day. Happy reading!

Wonderfully Wicked Read-a-Thon 2014 - Friday and Saturday (17th-18th)

Pages read
Friday: 392 pages

Pages read so far
652 pages

Books read
Friday:
100% (176/176 pages) of Vingadores: Cerco by Brian Michael Bendis, Olivier Coipel
100% (216/216 pages) of Thor e Capitão América: A Essência do Medo by Matt Fraction, Stuart Immonen

Saturday:
100% (168/168 pages) of Homem-Aranha e Vingadores: Contos de Fadas Marvel by C.B. Cebulski, Mindy Owens, Ricardo Tércio, Niko Henrichon, Nick Dragotta, João Lemos, Nuno Plati
31,9% (92/288 pages) of Haunted by Meg Cabot

Books read so far:
Vingadores: Cerco [Siege] by Brian Michael Bendis, Olivier Coipel (finished reading)
Thor e Capitão América: A Essência do Medo [Fear Itself] by Matt Fraction, Stuart Immonen (finished reading)
Homem-Aranha e Vingadores: Contos de Fadas Marvel [Marvel Fairy Tales] by C.B. Cebulski, Mindy Owens, Ricardo Tércio, Niko Henrichon, Nick Dragotta, João Lemos, Nuno Plati (finished reading)
Haunted by Meg Cabot (currently reading)

Read-a-thon status:
I think this is a very good start for the read-a-thon, I've read the comic books
in the time frame I expected. I enjoyed them quite a bit, they were better than
the last few "event" books by Marvel I've read. And Marvel Fairy Tales are so
adorable and cute. On the other hand, Haunted is pure Meg Cabot, a great
sense of humor, a bit of snarkiness, and a badass heroine. I'm loving it.
(And I'll love it more when Paul gets his ass kicked. I hate him.)

Challenge: Scrambled Titles hosted by Jennifer @ BookShelfery
Welcome to my Wonderfully Wicked Readathon Challenge! It’s almost Halloween, time to say “Boo!” So I’ve whipped up a fun challenge for you. (Hey, that rhymed!). Below, in the Rafflecopter, is a list of twenty-five scrambled words. Enter your best guesses, but remember, no cheatin’! For this challenge, to make it harder than last year, I’ve removed all the spaces from titles with more than one word. *evil laugh*
Phew, that was a bit hard! But a lot of fun, I do enjoy anagrams. It got easier when I figured out that the titles were from the same series. (Hint: it's a long, long series by a very well-known teen horror author.)

Wonderfully Wicked Read-a-Thon 2014 - Starting Post

My Shelf Confessions
The Wonderfully Wicked Read-A-Thon is a time when we all get together to dedicate the days of October 17-27 to as much reading as possible. You read as much as you can in order to get yourself a little further through that huge to-read pile! We know real life gets in the way and even if you can’t participate more than one day, you’re welcome to join in on the fun! - My Shelf Confessions

Back for another WW Read-a-Thon, this time the Wonderfully Wicked Read-a-Thon. I enjoy very much entering the WW Read-a-Thons, they are fun and make me feel free both in my reading and in doing the challenges. (I love doing challenges in read-a-thons, but some days it just isn't possible to do them, so it's cool that these challenges are open during the whole week.) I'm so excited, and looking forward for the challenges coming our way. I hope it's a good week for reading as well.

For the Wonderfully Wicked Read-a-Thon, my goals are:
  • To read every day, and to read for at least an hour (two if possible)
  • To enter some challenges, if not all of them
  • To update my progress every day, or most likely, every day I enter a challenge
  • To read 3 or 4 fiction books, and mix it up with some graphic novels, manga books, short stories, or novellas (whatever floats my boat)

As for the books I may or may not be reading, here's a picture:
I have a personal project where I am reading or re-reading Meg Cabot's books, in order to celebrate the upcoming release (planned for 2015) of a new book in the Mediator and the Princess Diaries' series. Meanwhile, the Mediator book was delayed to February 2016, which means I totally wish I had started Princess Diaries first, since its new book is still slated for Summer 2015, as far as I know. (I really missed Suze, and I totally miss Mia and her shenanigans.) Currently I am close to finishing the Mediator series, and I had planned to read books 5 and 6 this month, so I expect to read them during the read-a-thon.

I expect to read a few comic books, and these are two examples of them - they are the Portuguese editions of Siege and Fear Ifself, a couple of recent events for Marvel. I also will read Rebel Angels by Libba Bray for a challenge this month, so I may read it during the read-a-thon.

There are so few books in the pile because I fully expect to go off pile. I just don't quite know what I'll be reading, so the possibilities are vast and never-ending, thanks to the huge TBR pile.

Anyway, I'll shut up now, that's a wrap-up for the starting post for Wonderfully Wicked Read-a-Thon 2014. To everyone who is entering the read-a-thon, good luck with your goals, and have fun!

Wicked Wildfire Read-a-Thon 2014 - Wrap-Up Post

Wicked Wildfire Read-a-Thon

That's a wrap for another read-a-thon! As always, a fun week period composed by 11 days. I'm a big fan of WW read-a-thons, it's a low profile thing where I feel pressure-free, doing my thing whenever I feel like. So, I'm happy with this read-a-thon and how it went for me, with my goals and my books read.

Let's take a look at my goals:
  • To read every day, and to read for at least an hour (two is preferable, if possible) - I'd say it went well, I think I read at least a couple of hours every day
  • To enter some challenges, if not all of them - I entered all the challenges
  • To update my progress every day, or most likely, every day I enter a challenge - I did the second one, I don't think I needed to post more than that
  • To read 3 fiction books, and throw in some graphic novels, manga books, short stories, or novellas - I did more than that, I read 4 fiction books and a graphic novel in two volumes
  • Try to keep up with reviews, writing during this read-a-thon the ones for the books I'll read - eh, not so much; weekdays were so busy that I didn't have that much time to write reviews, and the end result is that I have now 3 books to review; I had reviews saved up when this started, and now I have none (oops)

And let's do stats because I love the crap out of it:
  • I read 4 fiction books (Champion by Marie Lu; Um Pequeno Escândalo by Patricia Cabot/Meg Cabot [A Little Scandal]; A Voz by Juliet Marillier [The Caller]; All Lined Up by Cora Carmack), a graphic novel in two parts (Capitão América: O Soldado do Inverno 1 by Ed Brubaker, Steve Epting, Michael Lark, John Paul Leon; Capitão América: O Soldado do Inverno 2 by Ed Brubaker, Steve Epting, Michael Lark, Lee Weeks, Stefano Gaudiano, Rick Hoberg [Captain America: Winter Soldier])
  • I read 1928 pages which is way better than the last WW read-a-thon and is fairly good for the usual read-a-thon experience for me
  • This is an average of 175 pages per day, which is definitely better than my daily average of 126 pages this year
  • The books I read were also longer (321 pages in average) than the average page count per book this year for me (275 pages)
  • The longest book was The Caller, with 456 pages, and the shortest ones were the Captain America: Winter Soldier two volumes, with 168 and 184 pages

And that's the wrap-up for this read-a-thon. Thank you to the hosts and everyone who hosted a challenge; thank you for the effort in organizing this.

Below are my posts for the read-a-thon, both the starting post as well as the daily-ish update posts, which contain both my progress and my answers to the challenges.

Challenge: Randomly Fill in Sentence hosted by Kimberly @ The Windy Pages
Finish the following sentence from a random sentence on a random page from your current read!

Here’s a sentence from the book Vengenance by Megan Miranda:

“The lady in room 2B was about to_________”
I'm currently reading All Lined Up by Cora Carmack. I picked a random page, page 113, and a random sentence,

He looks down, and those words are like a punch to the chest.

which turned out like this:

The lady in room 2B was about to...
look down, and those words were like a punch to the chest.

Cute challenge!

Challenge: Guess the Title Picture Challenge hosted by Michelle @ Book Briefs
Ok, so how does this work? First you pick a book. Then you find pictures to represent the words in the book title. Then you put the pictures/clues together and try to guess what the book title is.  Get creative and make it as challenging as you want. Make a post with your Book picture puzzles and go around to different blogs and try to guess some of the puzzles. (Words like “the” “and” “on” “Of”, etc. are excluded from pictures)
I usually do a variation of this challenge as a weekly feature here on my blog, and I'm a big fan of it, so I'm going to make a couple of easy ones.

Puzzle #1
Hints:
  • YA epic fantasy
  • the third book in this series comes out this year
  • a story with a badass assassin and a deadly competition

Puzzle #2
Hints:
  • urban fantasy
  • first books in the series
  • the heroine deals with a lot of moody werewolves

Have fun!

What a great weekend! I breezed through A Little Scandal,
and then I wrote a bit, in order to keep up with reviews.

Challenge: Do You Know Your Book Covers? hosted by Brenda @ Daily Mayo
My challenge is a book cover quiz to see how many book covers you can guess when just viewing a tiny portion of the book! There are some classics and some new books in a wide range of genres. The guess the book cover quiz shows a random selection of 12 books, so you can take the quiz multiple times!
Done! I got 12 of 12 points (100%) - many covers I knew, and a few were very lucky guesses. A great challenge, I always have fun figuring out which book it is from a piece of the cover.

Read-a-thon status:
Busy week, so I've been reading quite slowly. But I've been
enjoying my choices so far. Champion was a great ending
for the trilogy, Winter Soldier was a nice surprise,
and A Little Scandal is looking like it'll be quite fun.

Challenge: Tune This Title hosted by Kat @ My Shelf Confessions
Pick a song that goes with your current (or very recent read that you’ve read during the WWRAT) read. Tell us the name of the book and explain why the song goes with  your book.

For example: does it fit with the mood of the book; does it go with the main character’s emotional state?
I choose Champion, which I've finished reading on Wednesday. Reading the epilogue, it was so sad and depressing because of... reasons. (I can't spoil it, now can I? Even picking this pair book/song feels a little spoilerish.) Anyway, the sense of melancholy, and the specific circumstances of a part of the epilogue made me think of Last Kiss, by Taylor Swift. I just felt bad for the epilogue's narrator, because of the years that had passed and the sense of loss that permeated the story then.
