A Most Improper Magick/Kat, Incorrigible, Stephanie Burgis

I'm submitting this book to the 2011 Debut Author Challenge, hosted by The Story Siren. I'm also submitting this to the YA Historical Fiction Challenge hosted by YA Bliss.

Review: In this book, Stephanie Burgis creates a charming little story about a 12-year-old girl, Kat Stephenson, who is not your typical Regency young lady. She is the heir to her mother's magical abilities, which may be frowned upon in Regency England - it is not proper for a lady to dwell in magical dealings. But between her overbearing Stepmama, her gambler brother, and her sisters' love troubles, she may not have any other choice than to rise to the occasion.

I enjoyed a lot this story, although this is a upper-MG/lower-YA book. Kat has a mature voice and her adventures are so amusing. She was a bit stubborn, but quite smart, and she was very determined.

I really liked Kat's sisters, Angeline and Elissa, and the dynamics between them, as all the bantering and arguing and the protecting each other felt very sibling-like. It was really cute how Kat managed to get both her sisters a fiancé in the end. It was funny how Angeline paid no attention to Frederick Carlyle until his spell was lifted.

The story felt a bit like an introduction to the following books, as the main conflict was solved easily and there was a lot of worldbuilding, but I enjoyed myself reading about Kat and how much trouble so got in. The idea of a Regency England with magic sounds enticing and I'll definitely keep reading Kat's unladylike adventures.
